After trying to remain neutral, prominent state representative Jim Clyburn decided yesterday to endorse Hillary Clinton for president.
Clyburn’s endorsement comes just one week out from the South Carolina Democratic Primary next weekend and could go a long way toward tipping the scales in Clinton’s favor. Clinton, who started out strong among South Carolina Democrats has only seen her lead grow over the past few days as campaigns turn their efforts toward attracting voters in Southern states ahead of the SEC Primary on March 1st. Sanders, although making strides to close this gap, still trails Clinton by an average deficit of 24 points in South Carolina.
The endorsement from Clyburn may also strengthen Clinton’s already favorable relationship with African American voters, where she still leads Sanders by a margin of nearly 3-to-1
The South Carolina Democratic Primary is scheduled for February 27th.
